It doesn't seem fair for a new mom to have to worry about anything else besides taking care of her sweet newborn. I found out first hand that gall bladder attacks right after having a baby are really common. No fair and no fun.
2 weeks after we had Beck we were just hanging out and enjoying a Friday night at home. I started having a lot of pain in the middle of my chest right above my stomach. I took some time and just laid down for a little while to see if it would pass. Josh got the kids all in bed and I was able to just hang out while trying to figure out what the pain was. For the next 2-3 hours the pain got worse and it started to go into my back and right near my right shoulder blade. I got to the point where I couldn't stand up straight and I couldn't lay down. Josh had been looking things up online and had decided that I was having a gall bladder attack and wanted to take me into the ER. Finally around midnight I decided the pain was bad enough that I agreed to go to the ER. My dad came over and stayed with the kids and we took Beck with us (since he isn't sleeping through the night yet we didn't want to make dad get up with him!)
We got to the ER and right away the nurse knew that it was by gallbladder. She asked how old the baby was and where I was having pain. I told her and she said "You'll most likely have your gallbladder out tonight!" After a visit with the ER doc and a trip to the ultrasound room to check out my gallbladder, we were told that the nurse was right - I needed my gallbladder out. Apparently it's very common for new moms and a pretty routine surgery. I was admitted into the hospital, given a room and told that my surgery would be first thing in the morning.
This is me in the ER waiting for the doc to come in. I couldn't find a comfortable position.
Josh and Beck fell asleep in the chair while we were waiting. It was almost 2 a.m. before they got me checked into the hospital and we were all very tired.

Josh and Beck headed home after I got to my room and was given morphine to help with the pain. I finally fell asleep for a couple of hours until morning. Dr. Le my surgeon came in early Saturday morning to talk to me about the surgery. He told me that I had a lot of gall stones in the gallbladder but that it should be a pretty routine surgery and I would be going home later that afternoon after recovery. I went into surgery and woke up in the recovery room with Josh by my side. I never recover very well after anesthesia and get really shaky and cold so I remember that happening. I also remember Josh saying that I was going to need one more surgery the next day and that I wouldn't be going home. Turns out that I had some stones stuck in the bile duct as well and they needed to surgically remove those. Another surgeon would have to do that surgery and couldn't do it until Sunday morning. So suddenly I went from going home later Saturday afternoon to staying in the hospital until at least Monday morning. I was pretty bummed. And also in a lot of pain. The rest of that day I was pretty sore from the incisions that he made to remove the gallbladder and also dealing with the fact that I couldn't eat or drink anything in preparation for the next days surgery. Plus, even though Beck was 2 weeks old, I was still recovering from having a baby. Overall Saturday was a pretty crummy day. I had some great nurses though that really tried to keep my pain under control. They also wheeled up a baby bed from the labor and delivery floor so that Beck could stay in the room with us while I was there. The other kids were with our great friends, the Hammers, and we felt lucky to have everyone being taken care of. Sunday morning I went into surgery again and it was quick and I was into recovery again. The surgeon said everything was successful and that I could go home the next morning. I headed home Monday with instructions to not lift anything over 25 lbs for the next 2 weeks and to stick to a low fat diet. Foods high in fat could make me sick now that I don't have a gallbladder to help out with the digestion. The recovery was not quite as quick and easy as they had promised. I had a lot of pain in the main incision site for quite a while. I couldn't stretch my arms all the way over my head without having a twinge of pain or soreness. And little movements here and there would make things flare up again. And then one day after about a month, just like that, everything was better. I didn't have any pain and all the soreness was gone. It was a miracle. I am completely healed now and have figured out pretty much what kinds of food I can't eat. I'm so glad to have that all past me. What a deal.
My mom brought me this cutest little bouquet of flowers while I was in the hospital. After having a baby and then the gallbladder surgery, I have had enough of the hospital. I'm ready to just have life back to normal. Thanks mom for cheering me up with these cute flowers. And thanks Josh for taking care of me and the kids while I recovered!
