Mud Run 2009

Friday June 5th we headed to San Diego to run the Mud Run at Camp Pendleton for the second time. It always happens to fall on the weekend of Rease's birthday so we take the time to celebrate with her!
Rease took a flight with Grandpa and Grandma a few hours before us and went to Sea World. She's all ready for her trip - excited to be able to go with Grandpa and Grandma and not mom and dad.
We met them at Sea World when we got there and had such a fun day! Rease loved it and has been talking about Shamu since then. Grandma bought her a little Shamu toy and she takes it with her everywhere - including the shower where Shamu can "swim" while she's showering.
This year for the run Josh talked me and dad into doing it with him - which didn't take a lot of convincing since I watched last year and saw how fun it looked. We of course had to join the group and buy our kilts - notice that mine is way short. I felt like I had a mini skirt on compared to the boys.
So last year it was just Greg, his brother Myrick and Josh that ran - this year they recruited a whole group to run with them.

Myrick brought a waterproof camera with him this time and took some shots along the route.

There are a bunch of obstacles along the way - walls to climb over...

ropes to climb under and these were some tubes we had to crawl through.

There's one point in the race that you have to cross a big lake. The water came past my shoulders so we were basically swimming across.

Post-race. We are feeling good and dirty. There were a bunch of showers to rinse off with but that's all it really ends up being because the water was freezing! I didn't last too long in the showers so we went back to the hotel pretty dirty still.

Dad did great and loved the race. Good times.
The next day we went to a Padres game with Greg and Myrick. The game was really fun and the field was awesome. It was open in the back so you could see right into the city. We ended up staying until the top of the 9th inning and left to avoid traffic. When we left the Padres were down 6-1 so we figured it was over anyway. Later that night we found out that they actually tied the game in the 9th inning and ended up going 9 more innings before the game ended. What the heck! We missed an exciting end to the game I guess.

One night we went to the beach and had a fire. There were tons of people doing the same thing - it was really fun and I had no idea that was something you could even do.

Rease found some ashes on the ground and rubbed them all over her face. She loved playing in the giant "sandbox" at the beach.

Rhen just enjoying whatever is going on at the moment.
We ended our trip with some good pooltime. Rease is crazy in the water - she has no fear. One morning she woke up really early so I took her out by the pool so Josh and Rhen could sleep a little bit more. I took her pajamas off her and let her put her feet in the hottub. Before I knew it she had jumped in face first! I jumped in after her (clothes still on) to grab her. After she caught her breath she looked at me and said "I jumped." Yah. She doesn't get scared of the water which actually scares me. I guess we're doing swimming lessons this summer.
On the plane ride home Rease had her own seat. Since she turned two while we were gone we had to buy here a one way ticket home. We were on a tiny plane so there were just two seats on each side. Josh and Rease sat in one row and Rhen and I sat right behind them. This picture makes it look like they were angels on the plane but in reality they were little devils - both of them. Rease started crying because they made her strap into her own seat and she really wanted to sit on Josh's lap. Then Rhen started crying because she couldn't sleep and really wanted to. It ended up that halfway through Josh and I switched seats so we could switch which kid we were taking care of. We were exhausted by the time we landed.
Besides the plane ride home, we had a fabulous trip! We love our girls but decided that next trip we take is on our own. Havasupai here we come!

2 year stats

Stats from Dr. Erikson
Weight: 32.41 lbs - 95%
Height: 36.02 in - 93%
Head: 20.1 in - 100%
Rease is a healthy 2 year old according to Dr. Erikson. He said that she is about the size of a 31 month old - crazy big girl! One funny thing about our doctor - he has a birthmark on his chin and down his neck that is pretty big. Rease is terrified of him and the only reason I can think of is that the birthmark scares her. We talk about going to the doctor and how he's so nice and how fun it is - she agrees and talks about the doctor all the time. Then when we actually get there it's another story. She cries the whole time and won't even look at him. Poor guy. He really is a great doctor and so so nice. Hopefully she'll get over it by next time!

Logan and the hospital

Last weekend we went to Logan to Whit and Ty's house to celebrate Mama Beutler's birthday. Betsy, Travis and their kids, and Andy and Robin came and we had lots of good food and fun with the fam. It was a great, normal day with everyone up until about the last 10 minutes of the day...

Onto the drama that seems to follow us these days...

Josh and I were all packed up to leave when Josh and Rease started playing on the beanbag. He was picking her up and swinging her back onto the beanbag. Somehow Rease got hurt and started crying (which is pretty normal for her but she always stops right away after I kiss it better.) Well, she kept crying and I noticed that she wasn't moving her right arm at all. I told her to point to where it hurts and she showed me that her elbow was hurting. We tried to let her just relax for a few minutes but after we realized that she wasn't going to stop crying we decided to take her to the hospital. Josh was feeling pretty bad at this point and was in a hurry to get her checked out. When we got there and explained to the nurse what had happened, she knew right away what it was. She told us that it is called "nursemaids elbow" where the radius comes out of the socket. She said that it is pretty painful and makes it impossible to bend at the elbow but is easy to fix by popping it back in. Just as she was explaining to to us, she was also trying to put this little pulse taking device on Rease's toe and Rease freaked out and tried to get off the table. She put her weight onto the hurt arm and as soon as the nurse left the room Rease looked at me and said "better." She stopped crying and let Josh hold her until the doctor came in. He had Rease bend her elbow and move her fingers and told us that she had popped it back into place herself and that she should be fine. After thinking that her arm was broken for sure, we were glad to have it end this good. It ended up being a much better thing that we were thinking and Rease has been talking about the doctor ever since then. This is the "bracelet" they gave her and she was pretty happy that they didn't have to do much to make her better.

Good old Rease - keeping us hoppin!

Swaddle time

I had to put some pictures of Rhen in her "swaddle." We got this blanket from my mom before we had Rhen and started using it right away. It's called the miracle blanket and I can assure you that's what it is. She sleeps great and is happy when she's all wrapped up - and that makes us happy! She is now going to bed at 9:00 and wakes up between 6:30 and 7:00 - Wahoo! We love our sleep!

You're still a little young...

So this is the usual scene as we are trying to head out the door in the morning: Rease with an armload of toys/books/whatever she can find to take with her. So this morning I noticed this green piece of clothing mixed in with the rest - I wasn't quite sure what it was...
I figured it out pretty quick when I saw her dressed like this a little later on...
Yes, Rease snooped in my lingerie drawer and found some things she liked. Funny - I haven't seen these clothes for a long time (two kids -that's my excuse) so I guess being used as dress up clothes is better than not being used at all!

A new devolopment...

This is Rhen's newest trick. It used to be her whole fist but she has narrowed it down to just the thumb and seems to like that best. Someday I'll try to get her to stop but for now it's just too cute!

Just like mommy...

Rease sees me put lotion on every day and I always put my leg up on the counter to do it. I guess Rease learned this from me... Flexible little thing!

Whoops-a-daisy

It just happens sometimes...

Dutch Oven Cook-Off

Last weekend we had our first duch oven cook-off with a bunch of our friends. We had a great time and awesome food - even from those that didn't have much dutch oven experience!

The winners: Joe and Leslie for best dessert - pineapple upside down cake.

Kevin and Natalie best side dish - cornbread

And not pictured but made a delicious main dish were Adam and Lindsey - sausage and potatoes.
The kids had a great time playing together...

I have to mention the Winn's dessert - it looked like it was going to be yummy: chocolate cake with marshmallows, caramel and nuts. It didn't turn out like they hoped, but the concept was great! Better luck next time?
And cute Heidi practicing for her baby on the way! She is pro with Rhen.
Misty and Nate - great fruit! (They said they couldn't make dutch oven food so they brought fruit instead. We'll let you pass this time - but we expect something cooked next time!)
Most of all we had a blast with everyone. Thanks for making it a fun time!

Bees Game

Uncle Justin called us this morning and invited us to go to the Bees game with him at 10:30 - who knew they played in the middle of the day? So us three girls, grandma and uncle Justin spent the morning at the ball field. It was a sold out game because there were a bunch of elementary school kids there so we sat on the grass and actually had a great view of the game. Rease loved dancing to the music between innings and playing on the giant blow-up rabbit (she kept calling it the "animal." Fun times!

2 month stats

Hi! I'm 2 months old! Wanna know my stats?

Weight: 12 lbs - 76%

Height: 24.5 inches - 98%

Head: 15.8 inches - 82%

I had to include these pictures too - the other day Josh had Rhen all wrapped up ready for a nap and then decided to take a nap of his own. Rhen obviously didn't fall asleep - good one dad!

Last Sunday we spent the day with Grandpa and Grandma Beutler and had a great visit with our dear friend Sherrie from Washington. She comes down every year for Women's Conference at BYU and it was great as always to see her again. She is the sweetest lady and I can see why her and Jeanie are such good friends - they're like two peas in a pod. We had a fun day together!

Just a taste...

Rhen had her first taste of chocolate - she couldn't stop licking her lips it was so delicious.

Pretty

My sister Hayley got engaged a few weeks ago -yeah! We went wedding dress shopping with her and Rease loved watching her try on all the pretty dresses. She finally talked one of the ladies into letting her try on a dress of her own.
Aunt Hayley taught her how to hold up her dress when she walks so she doesn't trip on it.

This was the first time I realized that Rease is becoming a girly girl and since then she loves dresses and putting on her "pretty dress." We went to a wedding just the other day and she couldn't keep her eyes off the bride's dress - she kept saying "pretty."

Someday Rease you'll be a beautiful bride too!

Hurry up summer...

I think we are all anxious for summertime. Rease must know it is getting close because last week she found her sunglasses and has been wearing them since - who cares if they're upside down, they still do their job.
Summer - please hurry so we can start playing outside and swimming in the pool.

Welcome Wyatt!

My beautiful sister-in-law Brittney had little Wyatt on Friday May 1st - don't they look great! Goob job Britt and we can't wait to meet Wyatt in person. Welcome to the family little one!

Rhen

This picture is totally Rhen:
When she is awake, she is miss wide-eyes. Even when I lay her down for naps, sometimes she'll lay there for 15 minutes with her eyes wide open before she actually falls asleep.
This shows the chunkiness that is starting to build around the middle - what can I say, she's a Beutler and loves to eat!
She is such an alert baby and pretty mellow most of the time. She loves to just hang out and see what's going on around her.
Still not much hair on top - plenty around the sides and back like a little bald man, but not much to show on top.
If possible, her legs have gotten longer this past week. I put on an outfit that fit her two weeks ago and now the pants are full on floods. Growth spurt? Still my long, lanky girl.

TGPD Softball Team

We've talked about this for many years, but this is the first time we have actually done it - we joined a softball league! It's all us girls at work and our spouses - don't we look like an official team with our matching shirts? We had our first game last week and actually won! Great times on the softball field!
